New Standards for Food Contact Materials and Articles in South Korea

South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has published its latest specifications for food contact materials and articles.

Notice No. 2021-76 was issued in September 2021. It contains the latest requirements under the nation’s ‘Standards and Specifications for Utensils, Containers and Packaging’. It incorporates proposed provisions issued in May 2021.

Provisions include:

  • New language and a new structure for better clarity
  • Adding polyketones as a new material under synthetic resins:
    • Lead: no more than 1.0 mg/L
    • Potassium permanganate consumption: no more than 10.0 mg/L
    • Overall migration: no more than 30 mg/L
  • Grouping synthetic resins with similar structures into nine categories:
    • Olefins with six materials
    • Esters (twelve), with butylenesuccinate copolymer (PBS) and butylenesuccinate-adipate copolymer (PBSA) as individual entries – the requirements for potassium permanganate consumption are now excluded for non-water-resistant PBSA containers
    • Styrenes (five)
    • Amines (three)
    • Acrylics (three)
    • Aldehydes (four)
    • Ethers (five)
    • Vinyl chlorides (two)
    • Others (three – fluorocarbons, epoxy resins and polyketones)
  • Providing specifications in the form of a table for each synthetic resin, rubber, regenerated cellulose, paper, metal/alloy, wood, starch as well as glass, ceramic, enamel and pottery materials, for ease of reference
  • Providing new safety provisions for active and intelligent materials/containers
  • Regulating the use of recycled synthetic resins, including improved standards for recycled polyethylene terephthalates (PET)

Polyketone is a copolymer of carbon monoxide, ethylene and propylene, and refers to a synthetic resin in which the content of carbon monoxide in the base polymer is approximately 50%.

Food contact materials and articles are regulated under the Food Sanitation Act in South Korea. It prohibits the presence or use of toxic/harmful chemicals in food contact utensils, containers and packaging and directs the MFDA to establish standards and specifications for these products.

Implementation will happen in phases with the following effective dates:

  • September 7, 2021 – Notice 2021-76
  • January 1, 2022 – recognized raw materials (flakes, etc.) used during the recycling process if these are recycled synthetic resins made of physically regenerated PET materials and meet the criteria for recycled synthetic resins in utensils, containers and packaging

Stakeholders are advised to now check their products conform to the latest South Korean requirements for food contact materials and articles.

Tactical Pro Supply Donates a Portion of Every Sale to Veterans Organizations

Patriotic clothing is often seen around 4th of July and other public events which honor the spirit of the brave men and women in uniform. As a citizen, supporting veterans is a national duty, and citizens should show their support in whichever ways are possible. Tactical Pro Supply, a popular online US clothing store that sells patriotic apparel, is doing its part by donating a portion of its sales proceeds to various veterans causes. This program has helped thousands of honorable soldiers in need.

“Giving back to those who have sacrificed so much for their country is something every citizen of this great nation should partake in. Our business is doing what it can. For example, we donate a portion of each sale to support the PTSD Foundation. Apart from supporting veterans, our business also aims to support local economies, and such is why our manufacturing is done 100% in the USA. From designing and printing to packaging and shipping, the entire process is carried out within our borders. This coming from Tactical Pro Supply’s Chief Executive Officer.

This online store sells all types of grunt clothing, including 4th of July apparel, military t-shirts, hoodies, leggings, and American hats with flag patches.

“Each piece of apparel displays patriotism, as many include American flag patches while others have military-related images. Furthermore, someone who shops with us can be proud when they do so, as a portion of the sale will go to support veterans. We don’t import clothes from other countries, as we’d rather have everything produced locally here in the USA,” says a spokesperson for Tactical Pro Supply.

Orders can be placed online and there are always exciting discounts to take advantage of, especially around patriotic holidays and other special occasions. Shipping is free on orders above $70.

SGS and Allion Expand Test Solutions to Asia to Support the US Server IT and Networking Industries

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has entered into a commercial partnership with Allion Labs, a renowned artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) testing service provider, to support the USA’s growing diversity of technology companies working within the connectivity sector and expanded its ISO/IEC 17025 certified test lab network in Asia.

The partnership and expansion of one stop test solutions to Asia positions the Allion USA-SGS lab at the heart of the world’s major manufacturing hub. Building on the success of the companies’ partnership in the automotive sector, this development expands its scope to support the server, IT, audio-visual and networking industries.

By combining industry insight, testing expertise and laboratory resources, the partnership’s one-stop test solutions optimize the operation of products and software. Through the Quality Requirement Specification (QRS) Program, clients gain assistance in quality control with the setting of product specification and performance standards for Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to follow. The process enables the customization of plans at all points of the supply chain, from product development to mass production.

Frankie Ng, CEO of SGS said: “Our partnership with Allion, which began in 2019, supports SGS’s strategic evolution by aligning our global network more closely to the key TIC connectivity megatrend and customer demand, supporting our purpose to enable a better, safer and more interconnected world.

“In our mission to improve product quality and set industry standards, we provide our tech clients with practical solutions across the different product stages. Ultimately, Allion USA-SGS can help clients grow their markets, particularly across the 5G technology and IoT devices sector, by accelerating product time to launch.”

Summer Chien, CEO of Allion said: “We understand how product development is filled with difficult decisions, especially for the choice of key component and appropriate suppliers. Our ‘one-stop test solutions’ ensure we are best placed to simplify that process for our clients.

“Whether seeking rigorous component validations, software interoperability tests, or database storage solutions, we can help clients establish sophisticated applications with reliability, scalability, and flexibility.”

The Allion laboratory is the only test lab in Asia that has executed 1 million test projects for over 30 compliance and certification programs, including USB, HDMI, Thunderbolt, PCIe, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

This partnership forms a key element of SGS’s strategy to investing in the Connectivity business to drive business growth and support the fast evolution of consumer products in an increasingly connected world.
