SGS Reviews the Impact of COVID on Wireless Technologies

SGS, the global leader in testing and certification services, looks at the impact of COVID-19 on the use of wireless technologies to help manufacturers capitalize on the growth being predicted in this sector.

Lockdowns caused by COVID-19 have caused work, education, communication, and entertainment to all become online pursuits. The US trade association for the wireless communications industry, CTIA, reports that since the start of lockdown, voice usage has increased by 12.2% and data usage by 28.4%. Similar increases in the use of wireless technologies are being reported all over the world.

In response to the increased demand for wireless services, the industry has deployed Wi-Fi hotspots, services in new spectrums, and continued the rolling out of 5G. This has created the capacity necessary to cover the increased demand for voice and data services, alongside the adoption of other mission critical applications and connected & automated vehicles (CAV).

Wireless technologies have also been used to mitigate the effects of COVID-19. Internet of Things (IoT) solutions are being used for contact tracing applications and a variety of technologies, including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), Wi-Fi and Sigfox, have been incorporated into bands and bracelets to help organizations return to some semblance of normality.

Smart technologies were already becoming a common part of the family home even before the pandemic and, with lockdowns, these labor-saving devices are helping to mitigate the stresses caused by being stuck at home. In what was already a robust market, a September 2019 report has estimated a compound annual growth rate of 14.4% for the next five years and it seems that COVID-19 has done nothing to curtail this growth. In fact the opposite may be true – it is predicted global shipments of smart home voice-control devices will rise by 30% in 2020.

Manufacturers seeking to capitalize on this sector growth need to be aware that consumers now demand more than mere regulatorily compliance from their products. They expect good battery performance, security, and easy connections to existing technologies. In addition, they are demanding products that support more frequencies to allow better capacity and coverage.

When developing new products, these considerations should be incorporated from the earliest design phases. Manufacturers must also include them into any comprehensive testing strategy that goes beyond regulatory compliance and covers advanced performance. Approaching product development in this way, allows manufacturers and suppliers to ensure their products will meet consumer expectations while expediating time-to-market.

COVID-19 has shown many consumers the advantages of wireless technology. The quick responses taken by the industry to ensure capacity meets demand, has allowed this sector to blossom, creating opportunities that manufacturers and suppliers will only be able to capitalize on if they adopt the correct approach to product development.

Digital Defense Inc Establishes UTSA Endowment to Assist Cybersecurity and Software Engineering Students in San Antonio

Vulnerability Management and Threat Assessment Leader to Help Support the Education of the Next Generation of Cybersecurity Professionals

SAN ANTONIO – December 3, 2020 – To commemorate its 20th anniversary, Digital Defense, Inc., a leader in vulnerability management and threat assessment solutions, today announced the establishment of a financial endowment for the Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). The endowment will provide scholarships and support to students on the path to a software engineering or cybersecurity career. In addition, it will support UTSA and its efforts to further enhance what is already one of the most highly regarded cybersecurity programs in the nation.

Digital Defense has a long-standing relationship with the university, including collaboration through an intern recruitment program. Over the years, UTSA’s software engineering and cybersecurity programs have produced exceptional candidates who have transitioned into full times roles at the company. Additionally, Digital Defense’s Frontline.Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS) technology is utilized in the UTSA cybersecurity curriculum as a real-world training tool. The security platform helps students test for hidden threats on their target networks and learn about the vulnerability management process.

“We are grateful to be celebrating our 20th anniversary, a significant milestone, and wanted to give back to San Antonio, our hometown community, and the cyber security industry at large. Furthering our partnership with UTSA allows us to do both,” said Larry Hurtado, president and CEO of Digital Defense. “We seek out every opportunity to help our Nation and organizations around the globe protect their information assets from cyberattacks. The establishment of the UTSA endowment does just that – affording us the opportunity to help support the education of future generations of cybersecurity and engineering professionals, and longer term, provides additional relief to the cyber security workforce shortage.”

UTSA is an elite San Antonio higher education institution with national recognition in the cybersecurity field. Its cyber security program ranked best in the nation according to a Hewlett-Packard sponsored survey by the Ponemon Institute and its cybersecurity graduate program was ranked second by Universities.com.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

Scholarship opportunities will be available starting in 2021. Students enrolled at least part-time, in good standing and majoring in computer science with concentrations in either cyber security and/or software engineering are encouraged to apply.

“As one of the first cybersecurity companies in the world and cloud-based technologies in San Antonio, Digital Defense is an inspiring example of the impactful work that our students want to achieve in their own future careers,” said David R. Silva, Ph.D., dean of the college of sciences at UTSA. “Our students have greatly benefited from the internships and employment opportunities that Digital Defense has provided over the years. We are grateful for the company’s ongoing support and the endowed undergraduate scholarship will allow even more students to pursue a cybersecurity or software engineering career.”

DPI’s Acceleration Station produces high-quality parts faster. These services, including the Carbon® Digital Light Synthesis™ (DLS™) additive manufacturing process, make production and prototype parts in days, not weeks, without tooling.

“We’re thrilled to receive this award because it recognizes the outstanding efforts of our employees in providing our customers with the support and tools they need to be more successful,” says Kevin Hogan, CEO of Diversified Plastics, Inc. “The Acceleration Station engineering and production team works closely with customers to save time and money by optimizing parts for digital manufacturing.”

The CarbonDLS additive manufacturing process is up to 100 times faster than traditional additive methods, and transforms product design and production. This technology allows manufacturers and engineers to explore what has been impossible to produce through conventional manufacturing, including articulating structures, part consolidation, variable wall thickness, sharp corners, surface textures and more.
