New EU Legislation on BPA and Other Bisphenols in Certain Food Contact Materials

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 005.25, highlighting the EU’s comprehensive piece of legislation on the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives in certain food contact materials (FCM) and articles.

BPA is found in food and beverage containers, such as water bottles, and other consumer goods, and has been in use since the 1950s. Seepage into containers has been associated with health concerns around brain and prostate gland health in children, as well as behavioral issues, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Commission Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 (the Regulation) on the use of BPA (listed as Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) No. 80-05-07)) and associated bisphenols and bisphenol derivatives was issued on December 31, 2024, harmonizing the classification for specific hazardous properties in certain FCM and articles.

The use of BPA in food contact plastics is also addressed in Regulation (EU) 2024/3190, which revises Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011. In addition, the new Regulation repeals Regulation (EU) 2018/213 on the use of BPA in varnishes and coatings.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 005.25 includes useful tables summarizing the scope and specific application of the new regulation, as well as its additional restrictions.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 005.25 for more details.

CEN Publishes New Technical Specification for Passive Transportation Function Tricycles

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 010.25, highlighting the European Committee for Standardization’s (CEN) new technical specification covering the safety of tricycles that provide a passive transportation function.

The Toys Safety Directive 2009/48/EC established minimum safety standards for toys, including tricycles. However, the new technical specification (TS) – TS17876, published in October 2024, recognizes that some tricycles also provide a passive method of transportation, similar to a pushchair, via a bar or handle used by the adult, and in which the child is seated and restrained. This additional function was considered by the European standardization committee TC252, leading to the new TS.

In determining whether a tricycle falls under the scope of TS17876, several parameters, including marketing information, are considered. Where a tricycle is clearly sold as a pushchair, it must comply with all the relevant requirements of EN 1888-1. The new technical specification, TS17876, covers tricycles that are not marketed as pushchairs, but still provide a pushchair function by means of specific features.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 010.25 includes essential information on the parameters applicable to tricycles under TS17876. It also lists some of the safety requirements and test methods in EN1888-1, which inspired the new TS.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 010.25 for more details.

Protheragen Announces GeniusAb™: A Fully Human Single-Domain Antibody Platform

New York, United States—Protheragen has launched GeniusAb™, a fully human single-domain antibody platform to produce high quality and customized antibodies for research, diagnostic and therapeutic use. This is a major breakthrough in the field of therapeutic antibodies as it is able to provide highly specific, robust, and versatile solutions to a variety of diseases.

Single-domain antibodies (sdAbs), also known as VHH antibodies or camelid antibodies, are derived from the immune systems of camels and llamas. Unlike conventional antibodies, the unique structure of sdAbs allows them to bind to targets with high affinity and selectivity while maintaining stability and ease of production. These advantages make sdAbs a promising tool in biotechnology and therapeutics.

To reduce the costs and time involved in identifying new therapeutic single-domain antibodies from species such as camels and sharks, Protheragen has found a way to do so: the GeniusAb™ mice. These genetically engineered mice are designed to produce fully human single-domain antibodies. By leveraging these mice, researchers can avoid the need for in vitro humanization, leading to a more streamlined and economical process.

Protheragen’s GeniusAb™ mouse model boasts several advantages, including:

Robust immune responses to diverse antigens: The GeniusAb™ mouse models have a rich repertoire of B cells capable of recognizing and responding to different antigens, including proteins, peptides, and pathogens.

Sequence diversity and optimal affinity: By incorporating human antibody gene segments and implementing genetic modifications, GeniusAb™ mice exhibit a variety of antibody sequences that closely mimic those present in humans, which can enable the examination of a wide array of antibody variants and enhance the likelihood of discovering antibodies with ideal affinity and specificity for the desired target.

Excellent developability: Antibodies produced from GeniusAb™ mice possess advantageous traits, including stability, solubility, low immunogenicity, and compatibility with subsequent manufacturing processes, paving the way for the development and commercialization of antibody-based therapeutics and diagnostics.

The GeniusAb™ platform harnesses the unique properties of single-domain antibodies while ensuring that they are entirely compatible with the human immune system. This innovation opens new avenues for drug discovery and development, allowing researchers to tackle previously challenging targets with unmatched precision and efficacy.

About Protheragen

Protheragen GeniusAb™ focuses on fully human single-domain antibodies. Leveraging cutting-edge fully human single-domain antibody platforms and advanced antibody screening platforms, Protheragen offers comprehensive and seamless solutions for antibody preparation and screening.
