Cranston, RI, USA, September 2, 2020 -- A painting by the Dutch Impressionist Siebe Johannes Ten Cate (1858-1908) sold for $4,688, and a jazz-themed lithograph by the renowned African American artist Romare Howard Bearden (N.Y./N.C., 1911-1988) hit $2,125, in an Estate Fine Art & Antiques Auction held August 27th by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers, live in the Cranston gallery and online.

“The Siebe Johannes Ten Cate painting was the surprise of the day,” said Travis Landry, a Bruneau & Co. auctioneer and the firm’s Director of Pop Culture. “We knew the subject matter was strong for the artist but recent records had been depressed. This certainly shows the market is there for good imagery.” The painting was the top earner of the 344 lots that came up for bid.

The work, a fine example of Dutch Impressionism, depicted a fisherman on the bank of a river outside a city beneath a bright blue sky. It was housed in the original period carved wood frame that still had an old exhibition label on recto. The board was 10 ½ inches by 13 ¾ inches; the frame was 18 ½ inches by 21 ¼ inches. The painting was signed and dated “Ten Cate 1903”.

Although Dutch by birth, Siebe Johannes Ten Cate spent most of his working life in France. Van Gogh was an acquaintance; he once described Ten Cate as "a very neat man, completely dressed in black cloth, and not at all like a typical poor artist.” His favorite subjects were landscapes, city and harbor views. Le Havre was one of his favorite locations. He also made some etchings and lithographs. He was revered in France but, remarkably, was mostly neglected in the Netherlands.

The Romare Howard Bearden lithograph – a Modernist depiction of an African American jazz band – was edition #129 of 200 on Arches paper measuring 22 inches by 29 ¾ inches. The frame was 26 ½ inches by 34 inches. The work was artist signed “Romare Bearden” lower right and numbered (“129/200”) lower left. Works by the artist are highly sought after by art collectors.

Romare Bearden was an artist, author and songwriter. He worked with many types of media, including cartoons, oils and collages. The New York Times described Bearden as "the nation's foremost collagist" in his 1988 obituary. Bearden became a founding member of the Harlem-based art group known as The Spiral, formed to discuss the responsibility of the African-American artist in the Civil Rights movement. He also co-wrote the jazz classic, Sea Breeze.

“It was nice being able to have the live crowd back in the gallery,” Bruneau & Co. president Kevin Bruneau said of the auction, the first in a few months that permitted actual live bidding. Recent sales were online-only, because of COVID-19. “Everyone stayed safe and socially distant wearing PPE,” he said. “Bidding was strong in the room and online. It was a good day overall.”

A Modern nocturnal forest painting by Robinson Murray (Mass., 1890-1984), titled Trees Under Full Moon, depicting an elegantly simple stylized forest with golden aura illuminated by a full moon over a quick stroke variegated green background, gaveled for $1,750. The canvas, 33 ¾ inches by 42 inches (sight, less 36 ¼ inch by 44 ½ inch frame), was artist titled and dated (“76”) on verso and it retained its original Worcester Art Museum label.

Robinson Murray earned a degree in Studio Art from Harvard University in 1912 and quickly pursued a career in commercial art. This continued up to his retirement in 1960, when he turned his focus to modern abstract art. From 1960 to 1980, Murray exhibited at the John F. Kennedy Building in Boston and the Copley Society within Boston City Hall.

An Abraham Lincoln political campaign ferrotype or tintype (photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal), from around 1860 and depicting a clean-shaven Lincoln in a circular format, surrounded by a chased brass frame on tin mount and pin, in overall good condition, went for $1,625. The pin was just shy of one inch by two inches.

A 14kt gold braided rope heart bracelet, made in America circa 1960 and weighing 45.4 grams, made $1,625. The 7 ½ inch long multi-twist linked bracelet with heart detailing had a patent number matching a 1960 patent filed by inventor Simon Geldwerth. Minor scratches to the clasp and one heart charm with a minor scratch were its only blemishes.

Reno, NV, USA, August 20, 2020 -- Native and general Americana will take center stage at Holabird Western Americana Collections’ huge, five-day auction planned for August 27th-31st, live in the gallery at 3555 Airway Drive in Reno, and online via several bidding platforms. The sale is officially titled The Great Americana Pow-Wow Auction. Start times all five days are 8 am Pacific time.

“This auction marks the best material we've offered in a hot August sale in many years,” said Fred Holabird of Holabird Western Americana Collections. “The variety is outstanding, as is the quality of goods offered. There is truly something for everybody. And sellers take note – we average about 5,000 registered bidders per sale, probably the most in America for an Americana sale. With buyers all over the globe, we get to everybody. We are always after great collections.”

Native American offerings in The Great Americana Pow-Wow Auction will include turquoise and silver jewelry, baskets, Kachinas, and rugs. Also up for bid will be a fine California token collection, American and foreign counters and tokens from the Benjamin Fauver collection, rare whiskey bottles, a beautiful drugstore carved wood frontispiece and scarce Nevada documents.

The catalog also features a major pinback collection, baseball and boxing collectibles, gold specimens (including some from the Goodshaw Mine at Bodie, Calif.), American and foreign medals, Victorian furniture, a fantastic array of Western art, original Buffalo Bill/Pawnee Bill posters, large ore cars and incline cars from a Nevada City mine, and dynamite and candle boxes.

The list continues with an American souvenir plate collection (from around 1900 to 1920), music collectibles, toys and toy trains, postcard collections, directories, maps, a railroad pass collection and references, antique firearms, badges, mining and railroad stocks, United States coins, token dies, a rock-shop section, mining artifacts and more. Day 1, on Thursday, August 27th, will kick off with 93 lots of art, followed by 231 lots of Native Americana, 269 lots of general Americana (Part 1), eight lots of sports items and 46 lots of toys.

Native American lots on Day 1 will include a spectacular silver and exquisite sky-blue turquoise squash blossom necklace, circa 1950s or ‘60s, “the finest one we’ve ever seen,” according to Mr. Holabird (est. $3,000-$4,000); and a nicely composed Santo Domingo olla (or jar) from around the 1920s, 10 ½ inches tall and decorated with perky birds and sunflowers (est. $2,000-$4,000).

Day 2, on Friday, August 28th, will begin with 87 philatelic (stamps) and postal history lots, followed by Part 2 of general Americana (511 lots) and 24 lots of firearms and weaponry.

Day 2 star lots will include a first-generation Colt single action Army revolver, made in 1895 (serial #159597), with a 4 ¾ inch barrel on a black powder frame, in overall very good condition (est. $3,000-$8,000); and a Van Bergen Gold Dust whiskey bottle from 1880 in an ultra-rare aqua color in very near perfect condition, with applied top and light whittle (est. $5,000-$7,500).

Day 3, on Saturday, August 29th, will contain 125 lots of stocks and bonds; nearly 300 lots of numismatics (coins, many from the Fauver collection); and 217 lots of tokens, a fan favorite.

A rare trade token for D.K. Nichols in Masonic, a tiny mining camp near Bodie, Calif., from around the 1860s, the size of a quarter, should hit $2,000-$5,000; while a collection of dollar-sized Indian counters, 217 different varieties, with an American Indian on the obverse, dating from 1854 to post-1900, some for gaming / others for jewelry, has an estimate of $2,000-$7,000.

Day 4, on Sunday, August 30th, will commence with 42 lots of minerals, then progress into mining collectibles (277 lots) and close with 290 lots of bargains and dealer specials (Part 1).

Day 4 star lots will include a dazzling crystallized gold specimen from the Monarch Mine in Comstock, Nevada, circa 1989-1990, one-inch cubed, weighing 12.8 grams (est. $2,000-$3,500); and a large incline ore car used at a major California gold mine (possibly the Miners Foundry in Nevada City), around nine feet long and four feet tall, with ten feet of rail (est. $5,000-$7,000).

Day 5, on Monday, August 31st, will be a continuation of the bargains and dealer specials. Featured lots will include a hoard of more than 1,500 Indian Head pennies from 1880-1908, generally about good to very good condition (est. $2,000-$4,000); and a collection of over 600 rookie baseball cards from the 1970s-1990, all of them in near-mint condition (est. $500-$1,500).
