SGS hosts free webinar to showcase expanded global cosmetic testing network

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is pleased to announce a complimentary webinar introducing its expanded global network of clinical and in vitro cosmetic testing services.

In July 2024, SGS agreed the acquisition of Institut d’Expertise Clinique (IEC), a prominent authority in cosmetic testing since its foundation in 1990. IEC is highly regarded for its comprehensive portfolio of clinical safety and efficacy assessments, in vitro tests, sensory analysis studies and consumer trials for dermatological and ophthalmological products.

The acquisition significantly enhances SGS’s capabilities by incorporating IEC’s testing centers across Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Singapore), Europe (Bulgaria, France) and South Africa, seamlessly expanding SGS’s global reach and expertise in cosmetic testing.

During the webinar, scheduled for November 14, 2024, at 4.00 pm CET, speakers Lily Jiang, SGS Global Head of Cosmetics, Dermatology and Hygiene Products, and Etienne Camel, IEC President, will explore the unique capabilities and synergies of each testing center. In addition, they will provide insights into the study management process, testing techniques and panels used across the network.

This webinar will be of interest to existing SGS and IEC clients, as well as anyone involved in the cosmetic product industry.

SGS explains the new EN 17860 standard series for ecargo bikes

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a Consumer Compact article detailing the new EN 17860 standard series for e-cargo bikes.

The market for e-cargo bikes is expected to increase across the globe. Their versatility and eco-friendly advantages make them an attractive solution for lighter-load journeys over shorter distances, avoiding the use of fossil fuels.

This article explores the need for an alternative to existing standards, such as DIN 79010:2020 and EN 15194, as well as addressing the particular issues that the EN 17860 series is designed to address. In recent years, the functionality of e-cargo bikes has come under pressure as their weight-carrying ability has been raised, leading to problems such as cracked frames.

Testing must replicate real-life usage and demonstrate stability. However, the article does describe how distinguishing between commercial and private usage can be problematic, leading to potential noncompliance with the new standards.

Compliance with the standards offers businesses the opportunity to avoid costly recalls whilst ensuring safety. This article explores the development and scope of e-cargo bike regulation in Europe and the testing methodologies and solutions available from SGS.

New Californian Restrictions on Bisphenols in Certain Juvenile Products

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 150.24 to keep stakeholders informed about new measures in California to regulate bisphenols in two categories of product:
- Juvenile feeding products – consumer products designed or intended to be filled with liquid, food or beverage intended primarily for consumption from that bottle or cup by children younger than 12 years of age
- Juvenile sucking or teething products – consumer products designed or intended to help a child younger than 12 years of age with sucking or teething to facilitate sleep or relaxation

SB 1266 (Chapter 790) was signed into law on September 27, 2024. This expands the existing ban on bisphenol A (BPA), as found in the Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act (the Act), to cover all bisphenols above the practical quantitation limit (PQL, as defined under 22 California Code of Regulations §69501.1(a)(52)), to be determined by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 150.24 covers the background to the Toxin-Free Infants and Toddlers Act and includes a table with highlights of the new scope and requirements.

SB 1266 amends the Health and Safety Code (HSC), Section 108940, and will come into effect on January 1, 2026.

SGS Shanghai Health Science Laboratory completes US FDA inspection with zero 483 observations

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has set a new benchmark for third-party pharmaceutical testing laboratories in China following an outstanding inspection by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of its Shanghai Health Science Laboratory.

For a third consecutive time, the facility was not issued a Form FDA 483 at the conclusion of the US FDA’s comprehensive inspection (Zero 483 inspectional observations), becoming the first third-party pharmaceutical testing laboratory in China to achieve this accolade.

In the global pharmaceutical market, international recognition of pharmaceutical quality systems is critical for companies to gain market access. As a globally recognized regulatory authority, the US FDA protects public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products and medical devices. To this end, GMP on-site inspections evaluate whether a company's operations quality management system meets international standards.

Over four days in September 2024, US FDA inspectors undertook a full-scope GMP compliance inspection of SGS’s Shanghai facility. Its focus included quality management, chemical and microbiological quality control laboratory management, sample management, personnel training, hardware/software system validation, method validation, documentation and records, electronic data management and data integrity.

Additionally, inspectors conducted on-site reviews of actual tests in physical, chemical, microbiological and sterile testing laboratories.

Dr. Sandy Hao, Managing Director of SGS in China, said: “Our Shanghai Health Science Laboratory’s successful completion of the US FDA GMP on-site inspection with a zero 483 observations result is not only a testament to our long-standing commitment to excellent laboratory management practices but also a further consolidation of our authority and professionalism in the third-party pharmaceutical testing field.

“Our team continuously embraces SGS’s ‘Quality First’ mission to further enhance pharmaceutical brand reputation and customer confidence. With SGS support, Chinese pharmaceutical product manufacturers will continue to improve market reputation and customer trust, and readily access global markets. In partnership with our global pharmaceutical customers, we aim to drive the long-term, high-quality development of the healthcare industry in China.”

SGS provides analytical services spanning the entire drug development life cycle, including GMP-compliance QC testing, bioanalysis and clinical research, formulation development. We cover all segments such as chemical drugs, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices and pharmaceutical packaging materials.

SGS is committed to providing higher quality services to pharmaceutical companies in China and globally, helping products to be marketed efficiently and safely, and offering a solid guarantee for the health of patients worldwide.
