Microchip s SyncServer S600 Series Time Server Now Defends Against GPS Jamming and Spoofing

Mission-critical networks and other essential enterprise infrastructure can only maintain reliable operation if they continuously receive accurate timing information from network time servers, but these servers can be vulnerable to Global Positioning System (GPS) jamming and spoofing, a cybersecurity threat. Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) today announced a solution to this problem with the integration of its BlueSky technology signal-anomaly detection software into the SyncServer S600 Series network time server and instruments.

Microchip is the first to fully integrate GPS jamming and spoofing detection and protection, in combination with local Radio Frequency (RF) data logging and analysis, inside a time server. The SyncServer S600 Series Stratum 1 instrument along with the BlueSky technology's intelligent jamming and spoofing detectors continuously monitor local GPS constellation health and examine GPS and local RF signal integrity to assure validity.

If an anomaly is detected, the solution sends an alarm and, if necessary, the SyncServer instrument can be shifted to alternative time sources or an internal oscillator. This protects ongoing timing outputs while ensuring only minimal, predictable timing degradation to vital network and business operations in applications ranging from banking and stock trading to electric utilities and aerospace and defense.

The SyncServer BlueSky technology, which provides continuous detection and protection against GPS jamming and spoofing includes a comprehensive suite of logging, charting and measuring tools to characterize local GPS satellite signals as well as local RF events over time. This can help enable correlating, troubleshooting, identifying and correcting local anomalies, some of which may be related to consumer electronics, or nearby RF signal broadcasts. The solution is optionally available through the SyncServer v4.1 software release that provides a selection of features found in Microchip’s proven BlueSky GNSS Firewall solution for third-party GPS receivers and critical infrastructure.

Infosec Institute Announcement

Study Shows How Enterprise IT Leaders Clarify Cybersecurity Roles and Drive Hiring Success

MADISON, WI, March 24, 2021 —Infosec, the leading cybersecurity education provider, today released findings from its 2021 Cybersecurity Role & Career Path Clarity Study. The study surveyed over 370 cybersecurity leaders in the U.S. and Canada about resources used to structure cybersecurity job descriptions and development plans. It then compared responses to training investments, organizations’ abilities to fill open cybersecurity roles and sentiments toward resources like the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Workforce Framework for Cybersecurity (NICE Framework) to provide insights on what drives cybersecurity talent management success.

The study found while resources used to guide job descriptions and employee development plans varied widely across all organization sizes and industries, adoption of tools like the NICE Framework had the largest influence on organizations’ abilities to fill open cybersecurity roles. Overall the study found:

  • 81% of organizations reported they were at least considering aligning cybersecurity job descriptions to the NICE Framework
  • That same cohort was 676% more likely to report very to extremely well-defined cybersecurity job roles and responsibilities
  • And 57% more likely to report satisfaction with their ability to fill open cybersecurity roles than respondents at organizations with no intent to map job descriptions to NICE

“Last year, Infosec’s 2020 IT & Security Talent Pipeline Studyrevealed 73% of U.S.-based cybersecurity hiring managers face challenges filling open cybersecurity positions,” said Jack Koziol, Infosec CEO and founder. “We designed the 2021 Cybersecurity Role & Career Path Clarity Study to dig deeper into those challenges and see how job role clarity and investments in employee development impact how well organizations recruit and retain cybersecurity talent.”

Unsurprisingly, the study found organizations of all sizes struggle with cybersecurity job role and career path clarity. However, as organization size increases, role clarity improves — likely due to larger team sizes and fewer overlapping responsibilities. The study found organizations with more than 10,000 employees were:

  • 35% more likely to report well-defined job descriptions
  • 55% more likely to report having at least some clearly defined cybersecurity career paths
  • 46% more likely to have mature employee development programs with required training

“We are pleased to learn that the community finds value in adopting the NICE Framework to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of cybersecurity talent management,” said Rodney Petersen, Director of the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE). “Expanding use of the NICE Framework is a key goal in the new NICE Strategic Plan and encouraging the voluntary integration of the NICE Framework into existing education, training and workforce development efforts was highlighted in America’s Cybersecurity Workforce Executive Order.”

“Cybersecurity job role and career path clarity remains a serious challenge for most organizations,” said Koziol. “While larger organizations generally do better, plenty of opportunity for improvement exists to help practitioners better understand their job roles and career potential. If you’re struggling with this challenge now, our data shows mapping your existing cybersecurity job roles to the NICE Framework is a great place to start.”

About the study

The 2021 Cybersecurity Role & Career Path Clarity Study surveyed over 370 IT and security team managers from U.S. and Canada-based organizations with at least 1,000 employees. Data was collected in late 2020 and analyzed in early 2021. Infosec solicited responses from its own database, as well as the database of Osterman Research, a leading cybersecurity market research and consulting firm, to diversify survey results. Respondents were sourced from a variety of industries and company sizes to ensure a representative and robust data set, and received a nominal incentive for their participation.

Microchip Releases the First IEEE 802 3bt Power over Ethernet to USB Type C Power and Data Adapter

There are many consumer, enterprise and industrial devices today that have a USB Type-C port as the only input power option. While USB-C® technology can offer high power and high data rate, it limits the range of the installation to a maximum of three meters from an AC outlet. As Power over Ethernet (PoE) becomes more prevalent and a more convenient solution to provide power over a standard Ethernet cable, it is the most practical solution to provide both power and data up to 100 meters. While most adapters on the market provide only power, they provide only limited power up to 25W. Microchip Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MCHP) today announced a PoE to USB-C adapter with the highest power capability that converts both power and data while offering up to 60W USB output power via an Ethernet cable supported by PoE infrastructure.

The adapter (part number PD-USB-DP60) can accept up to 90W of PoE and convert it to 60W output over USB-C that will power most cameras, laptops, tablets and other devices using USB-C for input power. This adapter simplifies installation by reducing dependency on AC infrastructure. Without the dependency of an AC outlet, there is no longer a range limitation of three meters and power can be delivered over 100 meters. This adapter also enhances the remote power management capabilities of the USB-C power device. The remote power reset capability, provided by the PoE source, allows power cycling via web interface or Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to reset the device, rather than having to manually unplug and restart at the location of the equipment.

Microchip’s PoE to USB-C adapter can connect to a variety of PoE sources with various standards deployed. It supports newer IEEE® 802.3af/at/bt standards as well as legacy PoE standards. Having a versatile adapter is crucial due to the many different implementations of PoE already installed.

“This new device is ideal for easily deploying USB-C devices and providing them long-range power and data connectivity,” said Iris Shuker, director of Microchip's PoE business unit. “The adapters are built using Microchip’s USB power delivery ICs and PoE chipsets and are a perfect pairing with our latest PoE injectors and midspans.”

Having the capability of converting 90W input to 60W output enables devices requiring higher power charging to make use of PoE that could not have done so before. The adapter can be paired with Microchip’s cost-effective single-port and multi-port (up to 24) PoE injectors/midspans and switches that comply with IEEE 802.3af/at/bt industry standards and provide up to 90W power per port. If a lower power is needed to power the USB-C device, IEEE802.3af (15.4W) or IEEE802.3at (30W) PoE sources can be used.

Microchip also offers key integrated circuit solutions that enable the PoE to USB-C adapter, including the PD70xxx family of PoE ICs and the LAN7800 USB-to-Ethernet bridge. Functionality is enabled by Microchip’s Power Delivery Software Framework (PSF), an open-source Power Delivery (PD) stack that runs on the UPD301C PD controller and provides full PD 3.0 capability and customization for Microchip’s PD controllers, microcontrollers and USB hubs.

Pricing and Availability

The PoE to USB-C adapter is available now for $100.00 each. For additional information, contact a Microchip sales representative, authorized worldwide distributor or visit Microchip’s website.
