Leading the sale are two bronzes by Janet Scudder (American, 1873-1940), titled Cupid and Tortoise Fountain and Victory, each estimated at $15,000-$25,000. She was a feminist and a suffragette, often marching in parades and demonstrations to support women’s issues.

Headlining the contemporary offerings are two paintings by Emily Mason (American, 1932-2019). Mason worked in the Abstract Expressionist and Color Field traditions to develop her own “lyrical, luminous abstraction” (emilymasonstudio.com). Other contemporary offerings include a suite of four paintings commissioned by The Lego Group from Danish artist Hans Tyrrestrup. The suite of paintings was executed in primary colors with an abstracted Lego motif. A rare Charles Theriat work titled A Beauty by a River (circa 1888) is offered at $8,000-$12,000. This diminutive 6 inch by 9 inch work is among the artist's best, featuring many hallmarks of American Impressionism. A William T. Richards of The Cornish Coast is offered at $5,000-$7,000.

Nevada Introduces Restrictions on PFAS and OFR in Some Consumer Goods

Stakeholders are advised that perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and (additive) organohalogenated flame retardants (OFR) are to be regulated in a wide variety of consumer products in the US state of Nevada.

The state governor signed AB 97 (Chapter 112, 2021 Session) into law on May 27, 2021. This act amends the state’s Revised Statutes in relation to:

  • Chapter 459 ‘Hazardous Materials’ – PFAS in firefighting foams – prohibited for testing and firefighting training, except in specific uses
  • Chapter 597 ‘Miscellaneous Trade Regulations and Prohibited Acts’ – OFR in business textiles, children’s products, mattresses, residential textiles and upholstered residential furniture – restricted to no more than 1,000 ppm for each OFR

To learn about exemptions to the OFR requirement, read SGS’s original SafeGuard 077/21.

The Act includes the following definitions:

  • ‘PFAS’ – family of fluorinated organic chemicals with at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom
  • ‘Residential textile’ – textile designed for residential use as a covering on windows or walls
  • ‘Children’s product’ – product primarily designed or intended to be used by or for a child under 12 years of age

The definition of ‘children’s product’ does not include:

  •  A tent or sleeping bag
  • Consumer electronic products and components or products complying with Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Union (currently Directive 2011/65/EU, RoHS Recast)
  • Devices within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act (21 U.S.C § 321 (h))
  • Food, beverage, dietary supplement, pharmaceutical or biological products
  • Outdoor sports equipment
  • Toys meeting the latest version of ASTM F963 ‘Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety’

Stakeholders should be aware the provision relating to PFAS will come into effect on January 1, 2022, and the provision for OFR will become effective on July 1, 2022.

Dina Gu Brumfield Honored in 2021 Indie Book Awards

Unbound, A Tale of Love and Betrayal in Shanghai by Bethesda resident Dina Gu Brumfield has been named one of the best indie books of 2021 by the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group.

Dina Gu Brumfield’s debut novel is a finalist in the category of First Novel over 90,000 words in the 2021 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.  Dina’s novel stood out for its compelling story telling in the world’s largest book awards program for independent publishers and self-published authors. Unbound is a story of three generations of women who live amid the turmoil of war and political upheaval.  Dina paints a richly textured, turbulent portrait of the city of Shanghai in the twentieth century.

Dina is a native of Shanghai, China, who moved to the United States in 1989. Her novel Unbound is written in English, her second language.  The Indie Book Awards is the largest such award for books written in English language.

The awards will be presented June 25 in an online event which will stream live on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/NextGenerationIndieBookAwards at 7:00 pm (Eastern Time) and 4:00 pm (Pacific Time).

The Next Generation Indie Book Awards are judged by leaders of the indie book publishing industry, including many with long careers at major publishing houses. Their love of a great read and experience in the publishing arena identify books deserving a wider audience.

In an article at CNN.com titled If it’s cool, creative, and different, it’s indie, journalist Catherine Andrews wrote: “The term ‘indie’ traditionally refers to independent art – music, film, literature or anything that fits under the broad banner of culture – created outside of the mainstream and without corporate financing.” That definition remains true for book publishing.

Independent publishers include small presses, larger independent publishers, university presses, e-book publishers, and self-published authors.

According to Catherine Goulet, Founder and Co-Chair of the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, “Like other independent artists, many indie book publishers face challenges that the industry giants don't experience. The indies have to work much harder to get their best books into readers’ hands.”

“Authors and publishers who compete in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards are serious about promoting their books,” adds Goulet. “They aim to stand out from the crowd of millions of books in print.”

POP VoIP Offers a True Global Phone System across the World through Strategic Partnerships

The startup sells VoIP systems nationally and internationally!

London – The startup named Pop VoIP has been backed by its parent company – Pop Telecom – and aims to unite business related data with phone calls and create a platform that harnesses the capability that enables home workers, mobile phones and offices act in unison through a single connection. The system offers the gateway to team conversation and overcomes the difficulty of having to send messages to individual members of a team. This feature allows instantaneous communication with team members and all chats are backed-up on the system cloud-based storage.

Low cost communication, made from Pop VoIP platform and virtual integration with CRM tools and commerce solutions has been a key driver in the company’s success. Advanced PBX features increase the retention of call flow. Pop VoIP also boasts a virtual receptionist that allows quick transfer of customers to the right employee and saves the time that would otherwise be required for a manual receptionist to retrieve the concerned message and relay it on paper in person. Acquisition of freephone numbers from multiple countries allows the recruitment of new agents and expansion of the company to become a global provider with beefed up customer support. International calls can be routed anywhere in the specified country thereby expanding customer base without requiring the capital to move or build new offices.

The system uses packet-switched protocols through computer networks and has superseded the need to use cables for calls since data is transmitted via the internet making it easier for users to connect with their loved ones and friends. Monthly broadband solutions are an integral element of Pop VoIP which averts the need to purchase expensive circuit switches from local telephone supply. The signals relayed by the system can be transmitted from any VoIP compatible network. A simple setup with local network allows access to the VoIP system and several beneficial features. VoIP has climbed the ladder in the telecommunications industry in recent years. Features like conference calling, instant messaging, and call recording from a VoIP system and several other VoIP packages to suit small or large businesses and even for personal usage have become the dominant way of accessibility in this modern era.

About Pop VoIP

The freedom and liberty by granting the ability to move freely throughout the office yet continuously maintaining the availability and quality of the service is one major advantage of Pop VoIP that cannot be overlooked.
