SGS Highlights the Addition of One Substance to the EU Candidate List

SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 162.24 looking at the addition of triphenyl phosphate (TPP) to the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHC).

TTP is used as a flame retardant and plasticizer. With its inclusion on the Candidate List, use of this chemical on its own, or in mixtures or articles, is now subject to certain restrictions and obligations under EU law.

Suppliers of articles containing a Candidate List SHVC in the EU or European Economic Area (EEA) must fulfill several requirements concerning their duty to communicate the use of TTP, as well as notifying the ECHA under the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation and the EU’s Waste Framework Directive. There is also a requirement for up-to-date safety data sheets for substances on their own and in mixtures.

Announced on November 7, 2024, the addition of TTP expands the ECHA’s Candidate List from 241 to 242 entries.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 162.24 includes important information on the legal obligations related to substances on the Candidate List, including deadlines for notifications.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 162.24 for more details.
