SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 048.24 to keep stakeholders up to date with labeling rules for online sales of bedding, upholstered furniture and quilted clothing products in Utah, USA.

The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF), Division of Regulatory Services, informed businesses in April 2023 that they intended to enhance surveillance and enforcement of online sales of products regulated under Title 4, Chapter 10 of the Utah Code and R70-101. However, on February 2, 2024, the ruling was temporarily suspended following a policy review and feeding from the furniture industry. E-commerce platforms are therefore not currently mandated to display a uniform law label for upholstered furniture before completing online purchases.

This emergency rule specifically applies to bedding and upholstered furniture. Stakeholders should be aware that the regulations for quilted clothing textile labels remain unchanged. However, during the period of the suspension, no active regulatory action for online labeling will be enforced.

The temporary suspension will provide industry with time to ensure compliance with the requirements. It will also allow clear and consistent regulations to be established.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders up to date with regulatory changes that may impact their business. Interested parties are advised to subscribe to SGS’s complimentary SafeGuardS to stay informed.
